The photos above came from the Orange County Sanitation District. They featured a very successful display, which featured an Outhouse at a fair in Orange County. The outhouse drew a lot of interest from both young and old alike! It was a true photo opportunity. They have received many requests for more information regarding Outhouse Trivia. They even referenced The Outhouses of America web site as the source of information on an outhouse trivia poster they had hanging on the side of their outhouse.
What follows is a description of the excitement and interest in the Outhouse display at the fair. Hi, I work for the Orange County Sanitation District, located in Fountain Valley, California. Every year we participate in our local Orange County Fair with an informational booth.
This year the theme was "Join the Rush", a tribute to the California gold rush and a celebration of California's 150th birthday. And in keeping with this theme, we decided to do a "Historical Retrospective of Treating Wastewater." We built our very own OUTHOUSE as one of the main features. This is to remind people that modern indoor plumbing is really a connivance we now all take for granted!
In doing research for this project we discovered your site -- loaded with wonderful OUTHOUSE TRIVIA! Seems like everyone has an outhouse story, even our general manager, who grew-up using one! I guess there is even some kinda special secret club for CEOs who grew-up using outhouses? I'll have to find out more.
Shown above are some pictures of our display. We did not put a door on the outhouse for safety reasons at the fair, but it is a two seater! Our builder modeled it after the one his grandmother had on her homestead in North Carolina. Our outhouse only cost about $300 to build, a lot cheaper then the Glacier Park model.
In the back, you can see a bit of our life size replica of our outfall pipe. After we treat the waste water it is discharged five miles out at a depth of 200 feet into the ocean through our 10 foot diameter ocean outfall pipe.
Another display is the stand with washboards, rapid washers, chamber pots, etc. |
What else can you see in the images shown? Many times a photo is worth a thousand words and I've only elaborated with a few so here is your chance to add some "color commentary" to my collection. If your addition is worthy, you will find the quote added on the Comments to the Curator page. You can use Email to respond. If you choose to go to the Comments to the Curator page, be prepared to relax with a large beverage of your choice. The reading is spectacular! |
