In the words of the owner of this outhouse, E. Bedell: I always had a peculiar interest in outhouses ever since my earlier days in LeMars, Iowa. Not many left in that area now. However, I did locate a number in northern Michigan and even imported one of the neat ones back to my house IN THE SUBURB OF DEARBORN HEIGHTS, MICHIGAN. This one may be the only outdoor privy in the city---altho I doubt if many other people are holding their breath looking for one. This outhouse is a single-holer.
We parked it back there [behind the house] because Dearborn Heights is particularly ornery about displaying anything offbeat, where the general public can see it.
My 'Chick Sale' came from the Petoskey area, built in the early 20s by the Little family!!!! A little one-holer for the Littles!! Appropriate, huh? It was used occasionally up until three or four years before I found it, and seemed not have been beaten up by either the weather or marauding youngsters. It had been fairly well maintained by the relatives as sort of a family memento, and even has the original seat cover and porcelain knob intact. After cleaning it up, we decided to use it as a potting shed, and I am spraying a good coat of clear wood preservative on religiously. When you and I first corresponded, our (main) house was almost completely gutted. Everything including built-in cupboards, fridge, sinks, every stick of furniture, almost everything on the first floor,-- out. My wife and I decided to be the resident eccentrics on the block and went looking for primitive (farm built) stuff. We had seen it done in the house of an antique dealer friend in Ohio, and thought now was the time. Since you appreciate old privs, you might get a kick out of a houseful of stuff that matches the priv!!!
What else can you see in the images shown? Many times a photo is worth a thousand words and I've only elaborated with a few so here is your chance to add some "color commentary" to my collection. If your addition is worthy, you will find the quote added on the Comments to the Curator page. You can use Email to respond.
