Rick lives in downstate Michigan now but plans on retiring someday in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan near Grand Marais. He has property on Lake Superior but right now it's just vacant land he camps on when he can. This is about 350 miles from where he lives now, so rather than taking the time to build up there (not to mention no power for tools, etc.) he chose a "modular" design (perhaps he's the first?). The idea being he could build it in his very limited spare time, then when done, he'd take the pieces up and insert tab A into slot B, etc. He ended up with 8 pieces (base, 4 walls, top roof panel, front roof panel, and door) plus trim. Everything was stained and painted before he left. When he was ready to go, he just crammed everything into a utility trailer and up he went.
Upon arrival at the site, he found nothing broken from the long drive but there was a bit of paint worn off here and there from pieces rubbing together, but nothing serious. He intended to do the setup in one morning but there was quite a bit of rain the week he was there so the first day he only could dig the "basement" before being rained out. The area is mostly very sandy but he found a 10" layer of tightly packed baseball sized rocks about 2 feet down and then 6" of hard sandstone so that slowed him down a bit too. The next morning he put the base into the hole, propped up the walls, nailed everything together, lifted the lightweight roof panels into place, nailed some more, then got rained out again. Day three was simply putting the door, trim, seat & misc. hardware on.
He was very pleased that everything fit together just as planned since he did not actually have it all together before he left. The roof looks a little out of proportion but sure lets a lot of light in. Even on a moonlit night there is plenty of light inside to see with. He had to go with a steep roof slope because of the massive amounts of snow from the lake effect. Sometimes there is 6 feet on the ground here so he hopes the slope will keep it sliding off rather than building up.
You can probably tell by now that he is very proud of this privy and he thanked me a lot for my helpful website.
May 4, 2000 Update: He went up to the site of the Outhouse a few weeks ago to see how it weathered the winter & everything was OK except for the cheap wooden seat, which is cracking already from moisture coming up from below. He plans on replacing it with plastic & adding a few vents when he goes back up North.

What else can you see in the images shown? Many times a photo is worth a thousand words and I've only elaborated with a few so here is your chance to add some "color commentary" to my collection. If your addition is worthy, you will find the quote added on the Comments to the Curator page. You can use Email to respond. If you choose to go to the Comments to the Curator page, be prepared to relax with a large beverage of your choice. The reading is spectacular!
