In February 2000, I attended the Outhouse Races in Trenary, Michigan. Trenary is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan near Escanaba. As I was driving East on Highway 2 heading home, my eyes focused on a sight any Outhouse Tour director would slam on the brakes for...not one but two outhouses next door to each other.
The location is just East of Gulliver, Michigan and just East of the Dreamland Motel on the South side of the road before you get to Highway 77. The outhouses are located off Kanine St. and you look for a small white house. In the back is a little electrified outhouse (#4 above) complete with a working electric light! The door of the outhouse faces west.
The 2nd outhouse is located at the house to the east. This outhouse is old and weathered and it leans to one side. As you can see in pictures 1-3 above, it is a classic. In picture #2, you can see they have utilized it as an anchor for a clothes line coming off it to the east. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like this one is being used any more because there are tree shrubs growing in front of the door preventing it from being opened. It has the word HELLO etched into the wood.
I have more pictures of the electrified outhouse but so far have not be able to locate them. Don't worry, I'll find them eventually. |
