This contributor can still remember when the indoor plumbing went into the farmhouse in Nebraska where he was raised. He claims that some day he may find a picture of his outhouse which he used until he was probably 3 or 4 years old.... he certainly remembers the experience of winter usage, and some actual Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs in the place. His family no longer owns the part of the farm where the outhouse was located, but when he drives into the part that they do still own, he can still envision the old outhouse and he bets he could go stand on the spot where it once was and not be off by more than 10 feet or so. Obviously, the early childhood experience left vivid memories. It has been about 57 years since the indoor plumbing went in....how nice it was. His father kept the original 2 [I think] holer in place
for probably another 5 to 10 years after it became the "secondary " sanitary facilities. Today, the EPA would have an absolute hissy-fit over the way the pit was handled. He just moved dirt from another part of the farm and filled it in! There is no record of harm to any life in the roughly 50 years since that was done, either, by the way.
These shots are of a 2 story outhouse which is on display at the Grand Encampment Museum in Encampment, Wyoming. They have a web site at: http://encampment.1wyo.net/GEMuseum.html The site does feature the 2 story outhouse. These pictures were taken in September, 2003 when they were spending some time in the area. He didn't take any useable shots that show the full width of the stairs. The location is less than 200 miles from where they live in northern Colorado.
What else can you see in the images shown? Many times a photo is worth a thousand words and I've only elaborated with a few so why don't you add some "color commentary" to my collection. If your addition is worthy, you will find the quote added on the Comments to the Curator page.
