The HUMANURE HANDBOOK
The 10th Anniversary Edition of the most comprehensive, up-to-date and thoroughly researched book on the topic of composting human manure available anywhere. It includes a review of the historical, cultural and environmental issues pertaining to "human waste," as well as an in-depth look at the potential health risks related to humanure recycling, with clear instructions on how to eliminate those dangers in order to safely convert humanure into garden soil. Written by a humanure composter with over thirty years experience (Yes, we said over 30 years of composting Humanure!!!), this classic work now includes illustrated, step-by-step instructions on how to build a "$25 sawdust toilet," a chapter on alternative graywater systems, photos of owner-built sawdust toilets from around the world, and an overview of commercial composting toilets and systems.
The HUMANURE HANDBOOK Comments
"We think The Humanure Handbook ranks right up there with Rachel Carson's Silent Spring as one of the most important environmental exposes of all time." HortIdeas Magazine
"I just wanted to let you know that I have just finished setting up a composting toilet system, according to your design. I, at first, was a skeptic about the idea as far as odor was concerned so I started with just the old outhouse we have out back.
Well, to my surprise...the outhouse has no odor whatsoever and you would think you were using a "modern flush toilet," it smells so clean. I was also unsure about the compost and its odor...None! I was so pleased to find I had a clean and sanitary way to "dispose of" human waste, turning it into valuable safe fertilizer for the garden. I lined the compost bins, which I made from some pallets, with wire to keep small vermin from getting into it. The pallets were of such a type that you would never know it was a pallet and looks like nice fencing. I at first had problems getting a compost thermometer, but my local Agway ordered it for me. I now have built an inside sawdust toilet and am finishing up setting that part up. One thing I found was really difficult, was finding someone to give up their plastic buckets! Well, its clean, odor free, makes free fertilizer and is not dependent on the infrastructure! No electric needed!
With the outside toilet (outhouse) and the inside one it is so convenient! If we are working outside in the garden or with the animals we do not have to trudge back to the house tracking in dirt and manure from the barns. Everyone who helps me is so pleased. I must add that I have a physical disability that causes me the need to use a wheelchair and this system is wonderful as when I have severe flare ups, and my mobility becomes more limited I can move the sawdust toilet into the bedroom and there are no odors as with a regular bedside commode. I have even put one of those soft seats on it, you know the cushy ones available at any home depot...again comfort and no septic concerns. Thank you for your wonderful book as it solved a real problem in an inexpensive and environmentally friendly way."
